Later this year, we’ll be opening all 19 lanes of our new £45 million security area in South Terminal, moving our security search lanes into a single location and creating much more space for passengers.

Some of the new lanes will be ready for operational trials throughout the summer so if you pass through we’d love to hear what you think!

I know from reading the letters I receive from passengers that everyone wants security to be safe, but they also want to get through as quickly as possible.

We hate queues so our starting point for our new security area was to make the process as efficient as possible.

Good service starts by giving passengers a choice. We can offer you:

    1. Assistance lanes for passengers with reduced mobility or families with young children who need extra help.

    2. Premium Security Lanes for busy business travellers and those passengers who want that extra VIP service.

Helping all our passengers prepare for security will ensure the entire process runs smoother. There’ll be over hundred information screens in the new security area, showing information in a range of languages and also videos to demonstrate how to prepare hand luggage.

All the new lanes will feature electronic ‘pass gates’ so you just place a boarding card or the barcode on your smartphone onto the automatic reader and pass through into security.

You’ll also be guided by the screens to the colour-coded zone that has the quickest moving security search lanes.

I think it’s great that our own security teams have been involved right from the start, influencing the design of the lanes and helping shape the new processes we’ve put in place with staff – from the design of the new security preparation areas to the size of the new X-ray trays.

It was great to see the first four lanes open this morning. I’m really excited by the transformation this will bring to security and I know our teams are too.

With the average time taken to get through security just 1 minute 47 seconds in 2010, we’re confident this will make for an even more efficient security search process once all our new lanes are open.
