Gatwick Airport staff about to set off on St Catherine's bike rideOver 75 Gatwick staff members took part in a charity bike ride last week raising over £1,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice which cares for patients in the local area.

Our support of St Catherine’s Hospice is part of a wider community giving programme which we are very proud of at Gatwick. For many years now we have played an active part in the local community supporting charities in our area and in the past two years Gatwick has donated over £350,000 to good causes locally. A proportion of that sum has come from our own staff who are amazing in their support of fund raising initiatives and activities. They are always the first to embrace the opportunity to help the local community, for instance in March over 200 turned up at the airport at 11.30 at night to do a mile run along the runway to raise funds for Sports Relief.

Despite looking after 34 million passengers a year from across the globe, we never forget we are a local business employing 23,000 people in the area and we take our responsibility to the community seriously.

Each year we continue to support St Catherine’s Trust and also donate over £180,000 to The Gatwick Airport Conservation Trust (GACT) - an independent body that assesses and then funds hundreds of projects from a wide area around the airport on an annual basis.

Through the Sussex Wildlife Trust we support Gatwick Greenspace to deliver innovative biodiversity and species protection projects around the airport to ensure that while we strive to grow our business it's not at the cost of our local habitats and wildlife.

On airport we fund Gatwick Travel Care, a charity which looks after passengers who find themselves in difficulty at the airport. Our annual donation enables them to employ a part time manager and a team of staff and volunteers to assist passengers. This team is also available on a 24 hour call out basis as part of the airport’s emergency team.

The Gatwick Diamond exists to promote income and business generation in this area and as the largest employer we play our part in attracting and retaining significant investment in London and the wider Diamond. On a community level we support an annual event aimed at providing local firms with the opportunity and necessary skills to successfully tender for work at the airport.

In addition we have a number of links and working partnerships with organisations within Surrey and Sussex and support plenty of ad hoc projects and causes brought to us by employees throughout the year.
