Sustainability: our 10 point plan
At the core of our journey towards a sustainable Gatwick, back in 2010, we created a 10 point sustainability plan – 10 issues and 10 years to achieve them. We call it our Decade of Change.
Decade of Change sets challenging targets as we work towards our goal of being a sustainable airport. As well, it incorporates and goes further than the legal obligations we signed up to in 2008 in our S106 agreement with our local authorities.
Our 10 year 10 point strategy to make Gatwick more sustainable by 2020 is:
Share the benefits of Gatwick's growth, contributing to the social, environmental and educational development of our community.

Develop and fulfil our role as an economic driver of local, regional and national significance.
Find out about our important role in the regional economy
Reduce our carbon emissions by 50% (Total known CO2 at a 1990 baseline vs 2020 scope 1 & 2 emissions). 25% of our energy to come from renewable sources.
4. Air quality
Maintain current zero breaches of air quality limits.
Find out more about more about air quality in and around Gatwick in the annual Joint Report on air quality monitoring by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council and GAL.
Be consistently recognised as a best practice operator for noise management.

Achieve 40% public transport mode share for air passengers and staff by the time the airport reaches 40mppa.
Identify feasible measures to achieve a stretch target of 45% public transport mode share once the 40% target at 40mppa has been achieved.
Achieve a quality service rating of 4.5 (1 is lowest, 5 is the highest) for all surface access transport modes and facilities by the time the airport reaches 40mppa.

At the core of our journey towards a sustainable Gatwick we have created a 10 point sustainability plan – 10 issues and 10 years to achieve them.
20% reduction in energy (against 1990 baseline) and water consumption (againsts 2010 baseline)
Generate no untreated waste to landfill and achieve a 70% waste recycling rate.
Continually improve the quality of water leaving the airport.
Achieve a 20% reduction in water consumptions (against 2010 baseline)
Have an award winning approach to biodiversity through achieving a nationally recognised award for ecological awareness.

Working with our airport partners
We knew that if Decade of Change was going to be successful we’d need the support of our employees from day one. We created a Decade of Change working group with representatives from every area of our business to ensure that the key principles and targets of Decade of Change were embedded into the everyday operation of the airport - from the way we procure goods to how we look after our people, maintain a safe and secure airport and deliver a sustainable construction programme.
We also work closely with the airport business community – the airlines, retailers, construction firms, cleaning companies, hotels and other companies operating at our airport. We collaborate with our airlines on the Gatwick Fly Quiet and Clean aircraft noise framework; waste management; use of cleaner and quieter vehicles; and encouraging their passengers to use public transport to and from the airport. And we work with our other airport business partners on issues including energy and water efficiency, waste management and staff commuting.
