South Terminal is our busiest terminal and we've made some enormous improvements since becoming an independent airport.
We have improved the zones for cars, taxis, buses and coaches, and created a spectacular new entrance with much easier routes in and out of South Terminal. This was completed in March 2012.
By removing the clutter and installing a new lighter floor we have created a brighter, more open check-in and arrivals area. We have improved the toilet facilities too, using a bold new design to create a more passenger friendly, modern feel to the area.
We have created a large new security area with 19 lanes and dedicated facilities for passengers who need a bit of extra help, plus a premium lane for our first and business class passengers. The combination of new technology, new processes and a strong focus on customer service from our staff has had a real impact. Since the new facility opened in 2011 our passengers and airlines have been telling us how much they love the improvements.
Baggage system and Pier 1
We are building a completely new baggage system to improve reliability and flexibility for both airlines and passengers. We’ve already finished the first phase which involved upgrading our existing baggage system. The next step will be to demolish Pier 1 and create a new buildingto house the new baggage system. Thiswill be surrounded by five new aircraft stands, including new gateroom facilities for passengers, and will be complete by March 2015.
In 2009, we completed a large extension to the departure lounge to provide more space and retail choice. Our next step was then to improve the overall layout and give our passengers more choice of shopping and eating facilities. In July 2012 we opened our stunning new World Duty Free store, and we are now transforming the Departure Lounge with new lifts and escalators, more space for orientation, and a greater choice of high street and high end retail brands. This phase will be finished for summer 2013.
Pier 2 has had a facelift, with changes to aircraft stands and a brighter, lighter interior look, and plenty of seats for passengers as they wait to board their aircraft. This was completed in October 2011.

We have refurbished the immigration hall and improved the desk layout to give passengers a brighter welcome.
