Press Release

Cabin baggage restriction to be lifted 31 March 2008

26 March 2008

On 31 March, passengers travelling from Gatwick will be able to carry more than one bag through security. The government restriction limiting passengers to one item of cabin baggage was lifted at all other BAA airports on 7 January 2008, and in the Gatwick Airport transfer security areas in February.

The Department for Transport (DfT) originally granted the airport an extension of the restriction to allow the new x-ray and archway technology to be installed in central search areas. The necessary work has now been completed. BAA Gatwick will continue to apply the DfT’s cabin baggage restrictions relating to the size of each item (maximum 56cm tall, 45cm wide and 25cm deep).

However, some airlines operating at Gatwick have chosen to continue with a restriction of only one item of hand baggage. Passengers will be advised to check with their airline before travelling to the airport.Airport signage is being revised to reflect these changes. Passengers with any questions about the regulations should speak to their airline or a member of airport staff.
