Change for trolley service

10 October 2007

BAA Gatwick is to introduce a new coin-deposit system for baggage trolleys as part of an overall improvement of services to the airport’s passengers.

From 17th October, passengers will need a one pound, one Euro or 25 US cent coin, or a re-usable BAA disc to use a trolley. This is then refunded when the trolley is returned to a collecting point.

The changes are being made to make trolleys more easily available to passengers. Currently trolleys are abandoned when passengers finish with them, creating obstructions in the terminals. The new system will eradicate this and ensure a greater supply of trolleys to those areas where passengers need them. Trolleys have also become a nuisance to the local environment, being abandoned in public areas around the airport, including parks, open spaces, rivers and even private gardens. The coin-deposit system aims to reduce this happening.

In addition to the new trolley collection points which are being installed as part of the scheme, new change machines will be available throughout both terminals.

“We believe that the changes we are introducing will help us provide passengers with trolleys where they need them, when they need them,” David Stretch, Customer Service Director for BAA Gatwick, said.

“The new scheme will prevent our trolleys being scattered across the airport and beyond and make sure they are available to passengers.”
