Children learn the skills of forest survival
05 April 2006
Children of airport workers and from local schools had the opportunity this week to learn about forest survival as part of an Easter holiday activity organised by the Gatwick Environmental Centre, sponsored by BAA Gatwick.
Andrew Fleming, Community Education Officer for Gatwick Greenspace, hosts two days of sessions for children aged six and over, to teach them how to discover the skill of forest survival.
“The activities were based around games and hands-on activities that focus on the five essentials to survival in the forest: building a shelter, keeping warm, tracking, finding food and finding water,” Andrew said. “Each activity has been designed to encourage the children to become more aware of their natural environment in a fun and enjoyable manner.”
The events took place in Gatwick’s “Yurt”, located on land immediately adjacent to the airport, covering a large area of native and diverse landscape, comprising grassland, woodland and meadows. This is the third in a programme of events planned to take place at Gatwick’s Environment Centre.
BAA Gatwick is committed to being a good neighbour, managing its impact on the local environment and making a positive contribution to the quality of life in the local area. As a result of the partnership approach by the airport with Gatwick Greenspace, a dedicated Community Education Officer was appointed last year.
