Press Release

Gatwick Airport - advice to passengers (22.00)

18 December 2010

The runway at Gatwick remains open. However, given today’s severe weather conditions, disruption, delays and cancellations will continue throughout tonight and into tomorrow.

Tomorrow (Sunday 19 December) is busiest day of the festive getaway weekend at Gatwick with more than 700 flights scheduled to arrive and depart.

Unfortunately, passengers should prepare for significant disruption to their travel plans tomorrow as we work with our airlines to manage the backlog of flights cancelled and delayed today.

Passengers planning to travel through Gatwick tomorrow should check with their airline first and only make their way to the airport if their flight has been confirmed.

Flight information is also available on our website at www.gatwickairport.com and we’ll provide regular updates on Twitter @Gatwick_Airport.

The road and rail networks remain severely impacted by the weather conditions so passengers should also check with transport operators before planning their journey to the airport.

Passengers already at the airport, whose flights have been cancelled, should return home or find somewhere away from the airport to stay until their flight is confirmed.

Staff are on hand to provide information, advice and support to passengers who have no option but to remain at the airport and our priority is to make them as comfortable as possible.

To that end, we are:

  • Providing a facility with beds and cots to support those most in need
  • Distributing thousands of blankets, hundreds of bottles of water and food
  • Making showers and washing facilities available free of charge
  • Providing information in several European languages
  • Providing free internet access to enable passengers to check their flight status and rebook if necessary

Volunteers from Travelcare, our on-airport charity, are also providing round-the-clock support.
