Gatwick Airport advice for passengers (18.00)
18 December 2010
Gatwick safely reopened its runway at 14:45hrs after a 140 strong snow team worked tirelessly to sweep 10cm of snow and ice from the runway.
However, given today’s severe weather conditions, disruption, delays and cancellations will continue today and into tomorrow.
We are doing everything we can to look after passengers whose flights have been delayed or cancelled.
Hundreds of extra staff have been deployed across the airport, from directors to the operational teams. Staff from airlines, handling agents and other airport partners have pulled together to give our passengers the best possible care.
We are advising passengers already at the airport, and whose flights have been confirmed as cancelled, to make their way home, if at all possible. If they have no option but to remain at the airport our staff are on hand to provide information, advise and support to make them as comfortable as possible
To look after passengers tonight we will be:
- Providing a facility with beds and cots to support those most in need
- Distributing thousands of blankets, hundreds of bottles of water and food
- Making showers and washing facilities free of charge
- Providing information in several European languages
- Providing free internet access to enable passengers to check their flight status and rebook if necessary
Volunteers from Travelcare, our on-airport charity, have also been providing round-the-clock support
It is possible that the Gatwick area will experience further severe weather conditions tomorrow so passengers scheduled to fly tomorrow (and tonight) should check with their airline before travelling to the airport. Information is also available on our website at
