Gatwick Airport runway has now reopened (14.45)
18 December 2010
Gatwick has safely reopened its runway slightly earlier than planned at 14:45hrs after a 140 strong snow team worked tirelessly to sweep 10cm of snow and ice from the runway.
The first flights to take off from Gatwick this afternoon are Virgin Atlantic flights, carrying passengers to the sunnier climes of Antigua, Barbados and San Juan. These are scheduled to depart Gatwick imminently.
Despite the runway reopening, passengers should still expect further disruption today, with flights limited and delays and cancellations inevitable.
Gatwick’s advice to passengers travelling this weekend remains the same: do not travel to the airport without first checking your flight status with your airline.
The road and rail networks remain severely impacted by the weather conditions so passengers should check with transport operators before planning their journey to the airport.
Flight information is also available on our website at www.gatwickairport.com and passengers can get updates on Twitter @Gatwick_Airport.
