Gatwick Airport’s response to the Mayor’s aviation report

18 January 2010

Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive of Gatwick Airport, welcomed the report and an interesting contribution to the debate into how future air transport demand can be met. However, he cautioned against dismissing the role existing airports in the South East can play in meeting that future demand.

“The report today supports what the aviation sector has consistently said – that future airport capacity in the South East is, and will remain, a pressing issue to be addressed. It also rightly acknowledges that the aviation sector is a critical pillar of the national economy and will ensure Britain remains globally competitive.

“However, we believe that greater effort needs to be taken to look at how best to optimise existing airport infrastructure in the region to meet future demand. We are already looking at how we can make more efficient use of our single runway and realise growth potential at Gatwick, which we have calculated can grow by up to 25 percent over the next decade.

“We agree that the UK needs to act now to prepare for future air transport demand and all options must be fully explored.”
