Gatwick appoints local taxi firm
2 June 2011
Local Horley-based company - Road Runners UK - becomes Gatwick Airport’s new official taxi-service provider
- Passengers to benefit from improved customer-service
- Gatwick remains committed to supporting the local economy
Gatwick Airport announced today that it has appointed a local Horley-based company – Road Runners UK – as its official on-airport taxi service provider following a competitive tender process. The company will operate under the name Airport Cars - Gatwick.
Airport Cars – Gatwick, part of Road Runners UK, demonstrated its commitment to offering passengers an excellent service that represents good value for money, and to invest in new facilities and customer-service training for the drivers. For example, Airport Cars – Gatwick will invest in new facilities for the drivers, including upgrading the airport driver rest room, as well as new computer systems to improve the passenger booking service.
This commitment to improving services for passengers is fully in line with the aspirations of the ‘new’ Gatwick, which is investing £1 billion to modernise the airport facilities and deliver great services for passengers to, through and from the airport.
Gatwick is a significant contributor to the local economy, generating around £2 billion each year. Gatwick is also responsible for the employment of around 23,000 people, one third of whom live in Crawley. It was therefore important to Gatwick that whoever was appointed as the new taxi service provider would commit to employing all 252 drivers from the previous supplier – who are all local to the area. Airport Cars – Gatwick has honoured that commitment.
Commenting on the contract award, Jeremy Bennett, External Business Development Manager at Gatwick Airport said: “ Each year, around 14% of our 32 million passengers use a taxi service to get to and from the airport. With our £1 billion investment programme, we are working hard to improve the overall airport experience for passengers, and that includes their travel options. That is why we have brought in a new on-airport taxi service provider and built into the contract a customer-service standard agreement that aligns with our own commitments to excellent customer-service.
“We’re delighted to have Airport Cars – Gatwick on board and welcome its commitment to delivering excellent customer service.”
