Key points:

  • An additional 702,500 passengers, representing growth of 34.2%, travelled through Gatwick in April 2011 – 12 months on from the disruption caused by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland
    • Airspace above Gatwick was closed for approximately six days in April 2010 and an estimated 600,000 passengers did not travel
  • The year-on-year increase was also driven by the number of public holidays during this month.
    • Travellers getting abroad over the Easter holidays took advantage of a late Easter holiday weekend, the additional holiday to mark the royal wedding and the early May bank holiday
    • Malaga proved to be the most popular destination for passengers. British Airways began its first full month of operations to the Spanish city since it moved its services back to Gatwick from Heathrow, and doubled its frequency
    • Average load factors reached a record high for April, increasing 3.2 percentage points to 79.7% from 76.5% in April 2010
  • Contributing to growth this month were services to European scheduled markets which came on line on 16 April 2011. Norwegian launched its twice weekly service to Alesund, Norway and easyJet added Seville to its route portfolio, flying four times per week to the Andalucian capital.
