Gatwick calls for new UK aviation policy to be evidence-based
30 March 2011
- The UK must have the connectivity to compete globally
- Government must recognise important role of airports to the national economy
Gatwick today welcomes the Government’s invitation to broaden the debate and build consensus on the long-term future of UK aviation. Gatwick will work with the Government to ensure that all relevant issues are explored to ensure the future aviation strategy is based on robust evidence.
Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive of Gatwick Airport said: “I welcome Phillip Hammond’s acknowledgement that aviation is a crucial part of the UK’s infrastructure and that it should be allowed to grow and prosper. We share the Government’s commitment to balance sustainability considerations with the requirements to develop and sustain a competitive UK aviation sector. That is why we have set ourselves challenging targets to reduce our emissions.
“We shouldn’t, however, underestimate just how much this industry contributes to the UK economy. It generates over £12 billion each year and keeps over 500,000 people in jobs. To ensure aviation continues to support economic growth we call on the Government to recognise its importance to the UK economy and to specific sectors such as the City of London and inbound tourism.
“As Gatwick competes to grow and become London’s airport of choice, our current focus is on optimising and investing in our existing infrastructure to deliver a better service for our passengers and airlines. Looking ahead, it is important that Government takes full account of future demand if we are to sustain a globally competitive UK aviation sector. This will require a comprehensive assessment of existing airport infrastructure.
“We look forward to participating in the review of aviation policy and underlining the importance of airports to our national economy.”
