Key points:
- Underlying passenger numbers at Gatwick grew 4.8% year-on-year in January and represents continued strong underlying growth at Gatwick this Winter season
- Overall growth of 11.8% is inflated by severe winter conditions experienced across a number of days in the first half of January 2010
- Excluding days impacted by snow last year, load factors also showed good growth. On average, 66.7 per cent of seats were occupied on flights to and from Gatwick – a rise of 1.6 percentage points on last year.
- airberlin commenced operations at Gatwick on 7th February, flying twice daily services to Hanover and Nuremberg. Gatwick is now the only London airport to serve direct routes to Nuremberg.
Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive at Gatwick Airport said: “We are delighted to be seeing increased volumes from our existing carriers. Only last week, BA announced it is to move its high-end leisure route to Mauritius from Heathrow to Gatwick, and we are equally delighted to welcome a new airline to Gatwick – airberlin – which is now operating twice daily services to Hanover and Nuremberg.”
