Key points:

  • Passenger numbers at Gatwick grew 2.7% year-on-year in the first full month of the Winter 2010 season
    • Growth would have been in the region of 3.7% had it not been for the severe weather disruption that impacted operations to and from northern parts of the UK in the last seven days of the month and the heavy snowfall that reached Gatwick on the final day of the month
    • Strong and persistent growth prior to the disruption was driven by additional capacity, with an increase of 2.2% in average load factors to 75.2%, indicating a healthy demand for travel
  • During November, European scheduled passengers grew 10% year-on-year as new services to this market came into operation
    • Among them were Ryanair to Bergamo, Faro and Olso Rygge and easyJet to Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Gothenburg
    • Gatwick is also set to welcome Europe’s sixth largest airline carrier, airberlin, in February 2011
    • Services to Nuremberg and Hanover offer a further boost to European and business markets
    • Gatwick will become the only London airport to offer direct flights to Nuremburg
  • Air transport movements fell slightly this month following weather related cancellations

Stewart Wingate, Gatwick's Chief Executive said: "It’s great to see growth from easyJet, our largest customer, and from British Airways who are adding more long-haul leisure routes to their strong short-haul schedule, as well as new services introduced by Ryanair.

"Norwegian Air Shuttle, which switched from Stansted to Gatwick 18 months ago is also growing and I'm delighted that airberlin, Europe’s sixth largest airline – currently based at Stansted – has chosen Gatwick as its base for new services to Hanover and Nuremberg.

"This proves competition is working and that Gatwick is playing to win."
