Gatwick welcomes the start of the summer
23 May 2007
With the Whitsun bank holiday traditionally marking the start of summer, BAA Gatwick will be welcoming more than 465,000 passengers over the four day weekend (Friday 24th to Monday 27th May).
Sunday will be the busiest day with around 119,000 passengers flying to and from the airport. Spain and Portugal top the list of popular destinations with Malaga, Palma, Faro and Alicante being the top four resorts with Orlando being the top long haul destination.
Passengers are reminded to plan ahead for their journey by ensuring that any liquids carried in hand baggage do not exceed 100ml. These items must be presented separately at security in a resealable plastic bag measuring no more than 20cm by 20cm.
For this weekend, the South Terminal departure lounge will be open twenty-four hours a day so passengers with early flights can go straight through and enjoy breakfast and some early morning shopping before their flight. Selected restaurants, shops and bureaux de change will be open throughout the night.
Improvement works to extend the security areas are continuing and more security staff are joining all the time to help process passengers through to the departure lounges faster. Gatwick will be offering greater choice as new routes are starting throughout May and June. Monarch will begin.
