Gatwick’s Public Affairs goes public

11 July 2006

On Wednesday 5th July, the Public Affairs staff got together to take on a team building activity day at BAA Gatwick’s Environment Centre in Horleyland Meadow.

The 68 hectares site, which is owned by BAA Gatwick and open to the public, includes a rich mixture of grassland, woodland, wetland and is a haven for wildlife. Accompanied by Gatwick’s Environmental Awareness Officer Andrew Fleming, the team spent the day undertaking conservation work in one of the three woodlands; Upper Pickets Wood. The team’s tasks included tree maintenance, as well as opening up an ancient pathway and clearing a woodland pond.

A picnic lunch gave the team some time to learn about the Environment Centre and its activities
with local school children and the education programmes Andrew runs during term times.

Tim Knott, Public Affairs Assistant, BAA Gatwick, who organised the team building project said: “We decided to spend our team building day out at Gatwick’s Environment Centre. The day really helped us as a team to get to know each other even better, as well as making a significant contribution to the local  environment and to our community.” Tim went on to say: “This is valuable time spent and I would urge other departments or companies to swap their day job for a day out volunteering in their local community.”

Team members included: Julie Ayres, Sue Batchelor, Karen Lovett, Jo Melville, Karen Reeves, Tim Knott, Stuart McDonald and Claudia Erdmann.

The Public Affairs team was proud of their work they achieved at the end of the day and is sure to return for another exciting and valuable team building experience.
