Half-term holiday gets off to a flying start at Gatwick Airport

22 October 2007

As families take advantage of the school half term this week to take a break before the start of Christmas preparations, BAA Gatwick got ready for a busy weekend, helping passengers get their holidays off to a flying start.

Nearly half a million passengers passed through the airport over the four day weekend (Friday 19 to Monday 22 October). Friday was the busiest day with around 115,000 estimated passengers travelling. The top ten destinations this half-term include the traditional hotspots in Spain and Portugal as well as Turkey. Orlando remains a popular choice for families with Edinburgh the busiest UK route from the airport.

Passengers can get their holiday off to a flying start by planning ahead and following three simple steps:

• Only one piece of hand baggage per passenger can be taken through security
• Liquids, gels and pastes in containers no larger than 100 ml can be carried in hand baggage and they must fit into a clear plastic re-sealable bag measuring no more than 20cm by 20cm
• Once through security, passengers can fly with everything they buy.

Passengers are also reminded that if their airline offers check-in either the day before they fly, self-service at the airport or online, they can go straight to security and then relax in the departure lounge where there’s a wide range of shops and restaurants to enjoy.
