Press Release

Hand baggage restrictions relaxed for connecting flights

08 February 2008

From Monday 11 February, passengers on flights connecting through the North Terminal at Gatwick will be able to travel with more than one piece of hand luggage (subject to the airline’s permission). Passengers on connecting flights through the South Terminal have been able to travel with more than one piece of luggage since 7 January.

BAA Gatwick reminds passengers that the one bag rule per person continues for all other flights. This rule will be relaxed in the near future when the ongoing construction project to upgrade and expand the security facilities at the airport is completed.

In July 2007 an extra six new security lanes were created and an additional seven new lanes will be open by Easter 2008. This will bring the total number of security lanes at Gatwick to 35 - 21 in the South Terminal and 14 in the North Terminal. In addition, over 450 new airport security officers have been appointed since January 2007 as part of an ongoing recruitment campaign.

The Department for Transport has announced a deadline for all UK airports to be ready to relax one bag restrictions to meet regulations by 31 May 2008.
