Key Points:
- Passenger numbers in June 2011 increased by 5.2% - up by 158,600 passengers compared to the same month last year.
- Growth in passenger numbers was slightly lower than in the previous two months - April and May - for which growth was inflated due to ash cloud disruption in prior year.
- The rise in air transport movements is driven by growth in short haul markets. Norwegian, airberlin, easyJet, British Airways and Ryanair are among a number of airlines operating a greater volume of flights compared to prior year.
- Load factors rose in both the international and domestic markets. On average load factors rose from 81.0% last year to 82.7% this year.
- In June, Vietnam Airlines had chosen Gatwick Airport as its exclusive partner to launch direct flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Flights commence this coming winter season creating trading links with South East Asian markets and opportunities for the 90,000 UK holidaymakers who travel to Vietnam each year. This latest announcement highlights Gatwick's continued progress in becoming London's airport of choice.
- Gatwick also welcomes Lufthansa, who will launch double-daily flights to Frankfurt from 30 October. The arrival of Lufthansa and its flights to Frankfurt - the largest financial centre in Germany and continental Europe - will help Gatwick build and strengthen its business travel offering. Over 50% of the seats on the Lufthansa flights from Gatwick are expected to be taken up by the business traveller.
