Key Points:
- Passenger numbers in October 2011 increased by 2.0% compared to the same month last year – up by 57,900 passengers:
- Growth in passenger numbers was slightly lower than in previous months during the Summer season with reduced capacity year on year into North African charter destinations.
- Capacity on European scheduled markets, particularly from low cost airlines, continued to grow
- Average load factors for the month increased by 1.3 percentage points to 80.9% - a record high for October.
- This completes a strong summer season for Gatwick in which average load factors for every month from April through to October were higher than in the same periods last year.
- Gatwick welcomed the arrival of two new airlines at the end of October and confirmed others will be starting in the near future:
- AirAsia X commenced operations to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur on 24 October having moved its London base from Stansted to Gatwick
- Lufthansa launched a double-daily service to their Frankfurt hub on 30 October, reconnecting Gatwick with Continental Europe’s financial centre and enabling passengers to connect on to its extensive global network to destinations including Johannesburg and Mumbai.
- Turkish Airlines confirmed it will commence a daily flight to Istanbul from 20 December.
