Press Release

Overnight work on M25 Merstham railway bridge

19 December 2006

The Highways Agency is supporting Network Rail in advising drivers of overnight work taking place on two railway bridges over the M25 between Junctions 7 and 8 in Surrey between Sunday 24 December and Wednesday 3 January. The work will need lane restrictions on the motorway for safety reasons.

These bridge works will take place overnight and will involve grit blasting, repainting and general maintenance work.

The overnight work will take place between Christmas and New Year from 10pm to 7am, when traffic flows are at their lowest, but will be taken off at 05.30am on the mornings of Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 January.

Part of the work involves putting up scaffolding which will require access from the M25. In order to provide a safe working area, there will be lane closures and temporary speed restrictions in place throughout the works.

Drivers will see that a 50mph speed limit will be in place on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 as well as on the M23-M25 slip road joining the clockwise M25 carriageway. There will be no restriction on the anticlockwise carriageway.

Andrew Brunning, of the Highways Agency, said:

“Network Rail has co-ordinated the project along with the Emergency Services and the Highways Agency to give residents and drivers advance notice so they can consider planning alternative routes or allowing extra time for journeys during this period.”
