London Gatwick Airport helps shape new planning law
23 June 2009
London Gatwick Airport welcomes the opportunity, as a major infrastructure provider, to respond to the Department for Communities and Local Government Consultation on the Pre-Application Consultation and Application Procedures for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
London Gatwick Airport is the 2nd largest airport in the UK and is the world’s busiest single runway airport. The airport, in line with the requirements of current national air transport policy, continues to safeguard an area of land for a possible second runway which could be built after 2019.
Overall, London Gatwick Airport supports the provisions of the 2008 Planning Act for the creation of a new planning consent system for the determination of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. In particular the airport is encouraged by the main principles of the draft guidance which focuses upon the provision of a streamlined, expedient and more efficient decision making process through a single consenting regime, and which is governed by a new national tier of planning policy in the form of National Policy Statements.
We look forward to working with the Communities and Local Government Planning Reform Team in the future to help shape and develop an improved infrastructure planning regime for the UK.
