06 May 2008

BAA Gatwick, Sussex Police and the Sussex Police Authority have agreed the terms under which policing services will be provided over the coming year.

Under the Civil Aviation Act 2006, the Police Service Agreement (PSA) secures the future arrangements for the policing of the airport and its funding. It also specifies the level of policing provided by Sussex Police to ensure that the airport is a safe and secure place for passengers, staff and visitors. The agreement also provides for the continued development of Neighbourhood Policing as an essential part of the airport community.

Lionel Barnard, Sussex Police Authority Chairman, said: " I am pleased that agreement has been reached with BAA Gatwick Airport on the policing of the airport for the coming year. With 35 million passengers every year and thousands of jobs dependent on the airport, effective policing and security are essential to its continued success."

Assistant Chief Constable, Jeremy Paine added: “This agreement is the culmination of many months work. Our negotiations throughout this period have further reinforced our already strong partnership with BAA and strengthened our shared commitment to keeping the airport safe.”

Andy Flower, Gatwick Airport’s Managing Director, said: “I’m pleased that, with this agreement, passengers using the airport and the Gatwick community are assured of the highest levels of security and protection. It demonstrates the airport’s commitment to keeping people safe and secure throughout their journey and truly highlights the benefits of joint partnership working with the police of which we should be very proud.”
