Gatwick Airport welcomes retention of dedicated rail service

BAA today welcomed the Department for Transport’s announcement that air passengers travelling between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria would continue to have a dedicated rail service.

The Gatwick Express was under threat following a Government review which looked to ease commuter congestion on the Brighton Main Line. The review included options to scrap the Gatwick Express and replace it with more commuter services.
 
In today’s announcement, Douglas Alexander, the Secretary of State for Transport, confirmed that the existing Gatwick Express service will be retained until December 2008, after which time it will be modified at peak times only to call additionally at Haywards Heath and Brighton.

Stuart Condie, Planning and Surface Access Director, BAA commented:

“The retention of a non-stop quarter hourly rail service between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport will be welcome news for the millions of passengers who travel to the airport by public transport, and recognises Gatwick’s position as a leading international airport.

We will now work with the rail industry on the transition arrangements for the Gatwick Express to ensure that passengers continue to enjoy the high levels of customer service they have come to expect.”
