SE airports taskforce announced

CEO Stewart Wingate has welcomed today’s announcement by the Government that it is setting up a taskforce to improve passenger experience and efficiency at the major South East airports.

The group will include representatives from airlines, airports, passenger groups, business, environmental groups, the CAA and NATS and will be chaired by Aviation Minister Theresa Villiers. Initial focus will be on Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted.

“We welcome the introduction of the South East Airports Taskforce and look forward to working with the new Government, airlines and industry partners to deliver a great experience for Gatwick passengers now and in the future,” said Stewart.

“As an independent airport, Gatwick is competing to attract new airlines and passengers, investing £1 billion to improve facilities and increasing the efficiency of our operations. The quality of service we provide to our passengers and airlines is central to Gatwick’s strategy to develop and grow.

“The Government has been clear that it will not support new runways in the south east during its term of office and we have also been clear that a second runway at Gatwick is not an immediate priority for us.

“However, the Government needs to develop a longer-term airports’ policy, which enables operators to develop the UK's airports to meet the continued growth in demand and compete internationally, while mitigating environmental impacts.

“We are keen to share our thoughts and experience with the Government."

This announcement follows the inclusion in the Queen's Speech of plans to reform the economic regulation of UK airports, which is aimed at driving investment in existing airport facilities and improving performance to benefit passengers.
