Gatwick's South Terminal arrivals extension completed ahead of schedule

23 January 2007

The South Terminal's arrivals reclaim hall is a lighter, more spacious environment following an extensive programme to extend and refurbish the area. The new hall, which has opened three months ahead of schedule and on budget, now provides eight baggage belts and an improved experience for passengers with significantly more space within the hall. Five of the eight baggage belts are new and longer. Wayfinding has been improved with the installation of new Flight Information Display Screens (FIDS)
screens.

Construction work commenced in summer 2004, the arrivals extension opened in summer 2005 and the
refurbishment of the former hall started in autumn 2005. The work has been phased and made more challenging as passengers have had to pass through the area during the construction programme.

BAA has worked with the following key supplier organisations on the project:
Taylor Woodrow - principal contractor
Crownhouse Technology - engineering services
Rok - fit out
Logan Fabricom - baggage systems

BAA Gatwick’s Terminal Portfolio Leader, John Green said: “ This project provides for an enhanced customer service experience for arriving passengers in South Terminal. The project cost around £40 million and provides for larger baggage belts, which allows for better flexibility for the various aircraft sizes. This in turn give us much greater capacity and more efficiency for delivery of baggage. We are extremely pleased that the project has been such a success”.
