BAA Gatwick announce changes to the South Terminal Forecourts
11 June 2007
BAA Gatwick is announcing changes to vehicle access to the Upper and Lower Forecourts of South Terminal. From 20 June private vehicles picking up passengers will be directed to the short stay car parks, with short stay car park 3 being the designated car park for passenger pick ups, with a new car park tariff to accommodate the change starting at £1 for fifteen minutes. Passengers being dropped off by private vehicles will be able to use the Lower Forecourt, with BAA Gatwick doubling the number of spaces to accommodate passenger drop-offs, (which are generally faster), with a strict no waiting policy observed at all times.
The aim is to reduce waiting times and speed up the flow of traffic in a safe way. The changes are part of BAA Gatwick’s response to congestion around the airport and speed up journey times to and from the airport. The new scheme will improve the overall passenger experience as traffic has been delaying passengers and adding stress to their journey. It is in line with BAA Gatwick's commitment to manage the sustainable development of the airport and reduce unnecessary CO2 emissions from private vehicles. Alongside these changes public transport alternatives to travelling to the airport over car journeys will be promoted.
Improved signage on the approach roads to the South Terminal will be in place to ensure passengers are clearly directed to where they need to be.
Of the changes, BAA Gatwick's Managing Director Andy Flower said: " We are introducing these changes to the Forecourts for a number of reasons. Primarily we wish to ensure the Forecourts are less congested and managed in a more effective manner, with safety and security of our passengers and staff being our number one priority.
