09 June 2009
London Gatwick Airport welcomes the news this morning that Southern, the largest railway operator from the airport, has retained the Southern Central franchise. Southern has been awarded the new franchise, which will start on 20 September 2009 and will run for five years ten months until 25 July 2015.
"We are pleased that Southern has retained this important franchise and that they will continue to play a significant part in supporting London Gatwick Airport's surface access strategy", Liz Trevor, London Gatwick Airport's Head of Strategy and Planning said. "We will continue to work closely with Southern, both in their operation of the South Central franchise and, particularly in the retention of the Gatwick Express service, which they operate as part of the franchise. We know early operational issues did affect the Gatwick Express service but we remain committed to working with Southern on continuing to improve service levels for all our passengers. We know how important this dedicated and regular service to London Victoria is to our passengers, airlines and the to the region's transport infrastructure."
