Press Release

Spreading a little 'early' Christmas cheer at Gatwick

24 July 2006

Unwanted coins and notes from passengers travelling through Gatwick Airport last Christmas, during BAA Gatwick’s annual Christmas appeal, have been donated to three charities close to Gatwick’s heart. Gatwick based Travel-care, the Royal National Institute of the Blind, ( RNIB ), and St Catherine’s Hospice, Crawley, were each presented with a cheque for £2,730 by Kevin Harman, BAA Gatwick’s Chair of the Christmas appeal.

The Christmas appeal ran throughout the month of December last year, with special Father Christmas collection boxes being placed in both North and South Terminals for the duration of the appeal. A total of £8,190 was collected, which is traditionally divided between BAA Gatwick’s nominated charities. Ironically, on the hottest day of the year so far, representatives from the three charities were invited into the airport to be presented with their cheques.

The rather elderly Father Christmas collection boxes will be retiring this year, with brand new boxes coming on board for this year’s appeal. BAA Gatwick is happy to donate the current collection boxes for a donation of not less that £20 each- proceeds to go to the Christmas Appeal. These will be available in the Autumn.

Jean Yates of Travelcare said of the donation:” I’m delighted to accept the cheque and am grateful to passengers who kindly gave so much money to the appeal. The donation goes a long way in helping us operate our service at Gatwick”.
