This week Gatwick Airport’s Managing Director, Andy Flower, presented cheques worth nearly £22,000 to airport staff who volunteer in the local community.

The BAA ‘I-Volunteer’ Awards were established to celebrate the efforts of staff who volunteer for deserving charities and projects. In the four years since its launch, I-Volunteer has donated nearly £400,000 towards the good causes supported by BAA staff.

Forty-six members of staff from Gatwick entered this year’s awards and every entrant gained £200 for their chosen charity. Six Gatwick employees were short-listed in their categories and received an extra £500 for the 7th Epsom Scouts, Amberley Museum, St Catherine’s Hospice, Contact the Elderly and Horsham Newfoundland.

Bigger cheques were presented to the three members of staff who achieved ‘runner-up’ status in their categories. Simon Gale - Infrastructure Architecture Manager, Alan Skinner – Technician, and Gren Tipper – Head of Pavement and Infrastructure, each received £2,000 for their chosen charities: Barns Green Youth Club, React Theatre Productions and the NSPCC. Andy Flower said: “ I am proud to be part of an organisation that values the efforts of staff who do volunteer work in their spare time. These awards are a public recognition of the unsung heroes who make a difference in their communities.
