Note: Figures for the market sectors have been rounded. Totals as per traffic summary.
Key points:
- In January, severe and prolonged adverse weather conditions affected Gatwick’s operations and passenger numbers finished 5.4% down on the same month last year.
- A total of 1.87 million passengers travelled through the airport despite several days of disruption.
- As a result of the adverse weather conditions, year on year declines in traffic were recorded across nearly all markets. The European scheduled market however, showed growth of 3.1% as the underlying effects of continued and strong growth were realised.
- Traffic for the 12 months to 31st January 2010 finished 4.9% down on the previous 12 months. This was driven by eight consecutive months of declining year on year traffic at the beginning of the period and the latest decline in January following weather disruption.
- In line with the impact of weather conditions on passenger numbers, air transport movements also declined year on year. Passenger and cargo movements finished 7.0% down on January 2009.
- Cargo tonnage showed growth in January compared to the same month last year but remains in decline on an annual basis.
