Gatwick Airports' advice to passengers
Winter weather statement 1: Wednesday 1 December 2010
Gatwick Airport has been advised by weather forecasters that up to 20cm of snow is expected to fall tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning. This is double the volume experienced over the past 24 hours, and the result of a weather system that is directly over Gatwick.
Our priority is to ensure our runway is safe for aircraft to use. We have an 80-strong team working around the clock to clear the snow, and get our airlines and passengers flying again.
Given the latest weather forecasts, Gatwick’s runway will remain closed until at least 10:00 hrs on Thursday 2 December, which means no flights will depart or arrive during this time.
There will also be significant disruption, delays and cancellations tomorrow. Passengers scheduled to fly out this evening or tomorrow should check with their airline before travelling to the airport. Information is also available on our website at www.gatwickairport.com or by following us on Twitter @Gatwick_Airport.
Train services to and from Gatwick will continue to be limited and road networks are also affected by the severe weather conditions.
We are doing everything we can to look after passengers who have been unable to leave the airport.
- Hundreds of extra staff have been deployed across the airport
- A facility with 150 beds and cots has been set up to support those most in need
- We’ve distributed thousands of blankets, hundreds of bottles of water and food
- Volunteers from Travelcare, our on-airport charity, are providing support
- We’ve made showers and washing facilities free of charge
- We’re providing information in several European languages
- Free internet access is being provided
We will continue to monitor the weather situation and provide regular updates.
