Consultation & Schemes
This section gives you the opportunity to view details of any current consultations, and to find out more about local community schemes we have in place.
Fines for noisy planes
Gatwick has a network of noise monitors around each airport to monitor the noise from planes on departure at a specified location. Planes that break the noise limits are fined £500 by Gatwick Airport Ltd for the first 3dB over the limit and £1,000 above that.
We don't keep any of the money we raise from the fines. Instead we use it to support local community projects.
Voluntary noise insulation schemes
In the past we have provided noise insulation – special double or secondary glazing. Our last scheme closed some time ago, and plans for a new scheme are under development following the Government’s Aviation White Paper, launched in December 2003.
We are currently seeking feedback on proposals for a new scheme, the Residential Noise Insulation Scheme, but noise insulation has to be a last resort, because we believe that it is far better to have lower levels of noise.
Vortex strike damage
There are very few cases of aircraft vortex strikes on properties around the airport.
However, in response to changes in the types of aircraft using the airport, we have now published a policy which explains the support available to anyone whose property is damaged by vortex.
