Health and safety

We have a responsibility for the health and safety of people working within or visiting Gatwick. At any airport the potential hazards are diverse, and the sheer size of major airports and their operations makes them complex environments for health and safety management.

Our approach

Our primary focus is to make sure that all our assets and equipment are safe and secure. This means we must understand all our risks and  impacts, and ensure that we manage our activities safely – on a day-to-day basis, and in order to protect the long term future of our business. We recognise that safety and security is a journey without end and we set improvement targets that will continue our progress towards zero injuries/incidents.

At Gatwick we have an established BAA safety strategy, designed to improve our performance through action plans, aligned with our business priorities. Our plan is based on the level of risk to which we are exposed.

We operate a ‘Managing Responsibly’ system, which is described in the Managing Corporate Responsibility section. Safety is a key part of this, and is supported by a governance structure led by our Managing Director, with accountabilities for managers across the business.
