Surface transport

Airports are often transport hubs in their own right and can generate a significant number of surface journeys in and around the airport. Good road and rail links are vital to the operation and continuing growth of Gatwick. Promoting public transport alternatives to the car helps reduce emissions and road congestion around the airport.

Our approach

Our surface access strategy focuses on building for the future, working with our business partners and stakeholders to ensure that our passengers and employees have access to a range of travel options that meet their particular needs. Its three main objectives are to:

  • Reduce the rate of growth of trips by private car and taxi to and from the airport by encouraging greater use of public transport
  • Ease congestion by better traffic management, and implementing strategic road improvements
  • Manage on-site traffic emissions.

Our key target is for 40% of passengers to use public transport to travel to and from the airport. Our strategy also encourages airport employees to use public transport, as well as car sharing, cycling and walking options.

The strategy supports our surface access community commitments, agreed with our local authorities in 2007. The Gatwick Area Transport Forum Steering Group reviews our performance and ensures synergy with local and regional transport programmes. The main source of funds for our public transport and staff travel initiatives is the Transport Levy which is imposed on all public and staff car parking.
