Waste
Waste
At Gatwick, waste arises from most activities on the site, including retailing, on-airport catering, offices, cargo handling, cabin waste from aircraft and aircraft maintenance. Around 10% of this comes from our own activities.
We manage most waste at Gatwick through a single contract, which is now in place across BAA’s south-east airports. Waste from construction and refurbishments is currently handled separately.
Our approach
We want to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill by minimising our own waste stream, recycling, and by working with airport companies to manage their waste production and disposal.
Our BAA-wide waste strategy was developed in 2007, reflecting revised government and local authority strategies, recent changes in the waste industry and new waste treatment technologies developed in the last four years.
Our ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill to zero by 2020, and our strategy also sets goals for 2010 which include:
- No growth in contract waste per passenger
- 40% of BAA contract waste to be recycled/composted
- 85% of construction waste to be recycled/composted.
