Regulation

Gatwick Airport is regulated under the 1986 Airports Act. This regulation determines the level of airport charges Gatwick can charge its customers for the provision of services and establishes quality standards for those services. Regulatory bodies that influence Gatwick’s operations include:

  • The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the UK’s independent aviation sector regulator that is responsible for airspace policy, safety regulation, consumer protection and the economic regulation of airports.
  • The Competition Commission (CC), via an automatic referral from the CAA,  is involved in the price control determinations for Gatwick, as well as being the UK’s overall competition regulator.
  • The Department for Transport (DfT) is responsible for UK aviation policy and is currently undertaking a review of the economic regulation of airports which is covered further on the economic regulation page.
  • The European Commission (EC) is responsible for European wide aviation policy.

Here you can find out more about Gatwick's interaction with these authorities.
