Community matters

Community matters to BAA Gatwick.

We have a strong commitment to the communities around our airport. Our aim is to do all that we can to address issues that concern our neighbours most – for example working with our airlines to try and reduce the impact of aircraft noise, managing air quality and helping to reduce congestion on the roads.

We also want to create opportunities for local residents to enjoy their local airport – even those who don’t use it regularly to fly to the range of worldwide destinations on their doorstep – to make the most of the economic benefits such as training programmes and creating jobs for local people.

At Gatwick, our community support is driven by the key commitments and actions in BAA Gatwick’s sustainable development strategy and this is currently channelled into three main areas – education, environment and economic regeneration.

Our clear objective is to make a positive contribution to the local quality of life and to continue to earn the support and trust of our stakeholders.

Everything we do is as a result of extensive consultation with local stakeholders such as Education Business Partnerships (EBPs), schools, local authorities, local businesses, economic forums, employment forums and environmental groups.

To make sure that we are in touch with the changing dynamics of the local community and their issues and priorities, we will continue to work in partnership with a range of groups and organisations to identify, develop and deliver projects across every aspect of community life.

Staff are invaluable in helping to deliver a variety of community projects. Their time, skills and expertise are an important additional resource.

This year, employee volunteers from BAA Gatwick won a prestigious national community volunteering award. Community Service Volunteers (CSV) Make A Difference Day Awards recognise the UK’s top volunteers and the 60-strong Gatwick team were presented with the ‘Best Employee Activity’ Award for their work in transforming a garden area for Crawley based charity, 'Surestart'.
