Community noise monitoring
For several years we've been running a noise monitoring programme to get a better understanding of the levels of aircraft noise in the communities surrounding Gatwick Airport.
What is a noise monitor?
A noise monitor provides a method of monitoring and recording noise from both aircraft and background sources. This allows us to evaluate trends and make comparisons between noise levels at different locations.
Where are noise monitors located?
The map below shows the location of our current and historic monitors:
How we decide on the location of new monitors
Noise monitors are located in conjunction with the Gatwick Noise Monitoring Group (GNMG) and the Noise And Track Monitoring Advisory Group (NATMAG). Both groups help us to ensure there's a fair and representative geographical spread of noise monitors around the airport, so that as many communities as possible are covered by the scheme. In addition, the groups assist in the positioning of noise monitors to collect scientific data for airspace trials and changes.
Noise monitors are typically in place for one year or potentially longer if additional data is required.
We do not place mobile noise monitors in locations specifically in response to requests from individuals, however any requests are taken in to consideration as they assist the GNMG and NATMAG to get the best locations for them. If you would like to propose a site for a noise monitor then this should be raised via your local Gatwick Consultative Committee (GATCOM) member. If you do not know your GATCOM member your Parish Council will pass on your request.
Below is a list of sites for the location of new monitors:
|NMB RNN trail||Approved||Timescales re-evaluated by NMB|
|Oakwood Hill (close to current site)||Pending||Suitable location to be confirmed|
|Ashdown Forest||Approved||Suitable location to be confirmed|
|WILLO/TIMBA holding stacks||Approved||Suitable location to be confirmed|
Noise monitoring reports
We produce a a range of reports from the areas where our noise monitors are located. These reports are produced by our independent acoustic consultants and are all available below:

Unfortunately we are not able to provide noise data from mobile noise monitors in response to individual requests. You can, however, create your own reports using our WebTrak flight tracker.
The GNMG consists of Environmental Health Officers and associated noise professionals from the Local Authorities surrounding Gatwick Airport, the Technical Advisor from the Gatwick Airport Consultative Committee (GATCOM), the Gatwick Airport Flight Team Performance Manager and Gatwick Airport Ltd’s independent acoustic consultants. The NATMAG is chaired by Gatwick Airport Ltd with membership drawn from the Department for Transport, National Air Traffic Services, the airline industry, local Environmental Health Officers and appointed members from GATCOM. It oversees the administration of the environmental monitoring systems used by the Flight Performance Team at Gatwick Airport and discusses local issues concerning aircraft noise and track keeping.
