Business areas

There are so many different careers to pursue at Gatwick Airport.

Here are just a few of our teams to give you a flavour of the different types of jobs available at Gatwick:

Our business areas:

Airport security consists of two main areas. Security regulation supports the ‘front-line’ security staff by providing specialist advice, processes and procedures that enable everybody to fulfil the legal requirements set for the airport. Security operations are primarily responsible for the day-to-day screening of passengers, staff and baggage, ensuring that both Department for Transport (DfT) and customer service standards are achieved.

External security are responsible for the screening of staff and baggage, security and control of vehicle access onto the airfield to ensure the integrity of the critical part is maintained.

All our security guards also deliver high levels of customer service to our passengers.

Airside operations teams

Airside operations manage all aircraft movements on the airfield. The department is also responsible for vehicle traffic within the airport perimeter, runway lighting and control, liaising with ground handlers and service providers to ensure that all aspects of health, safety and aviation requirements are met and sustained. Airside operations include a fully effective emergency Fire Service, in accordance with regulatory requirements and agreed standards. Gatwick Airport is the world's busiest single runway operation, and the airport fire service that protects it is trained to the highest possible standards, using modern training facilities and techniques. They attend over 2,500 incidents each year, ranging from aircraft emergencies and road traffic accidents to medical emergencies.

Engineers are vital to the successful and smooth running of our airport. Our engineering teams manage all airport assets in an efficient way, which helps passengers have the best experience when they travel through Gatwick. They look after a full range of equipment from the inter-terminal shuttle to lifts, escalators and travelators. Even essential smaller items such as hand dryers are within their remit. Our engineering team protects our airport and maintains a safe environment for both our staff and our passengers, in line with UK and EU legislation.

Engineering works closely with the Construction teams and shares technical standards, standard operating procedures and the Asset Management Centre (AMC) to support the work they do to improve the airport. Our dedicated team delivers a range of information that ensures our airport remains safe, compliant and reliable.

Construction team

Gatwick’s construction team is at the cutting edge of exciting projects which will transform Gatwick and our future. The team is one of the biggest within the airport and is responsible for delivering our huge five year capital investment programme.

There are eight different work streams currently underway and these areas:

  • Airfield
  • Baggage
  • Retail
  • Surface access, property and car parks
  • Security
  • Pier 6
  • Terminals
  • Low and medium complexity projects

Each programme is headed up by a programme manager who is supported by project managers, engineers, quantity surveyors and planners.

Working within a live airport environment is unique and brings with it other challenges normally not seen within the general construction industry. It's a great opportunity for individuals and team to gain invaluable insights and experience in their chosen discipline.

Our passengers come first, so everything we do must be meticulously planned so that work is carried out in a logical way without interfering with the smooth operation of the airport and our multiple systems.

The Gatwick IT department is widely considered by industry leaders to be in the top five most innovative airports in the world.

The team is multi-disciplined and fast-moving. We are proud to have recently won several digital innovation awards including best in-house digital team of the year; best use of mobile technology; best corporate app; business IT innovation of the year and most innovative use of digital technology.

Gatwick Airport has become the first major airport in the world to complete the rollout of a cloud based flight information display system, which now covers 1200 screens within the airport and in local hotels.

The airport 'community app' designed to provide up-to-the minute information for the 30,000 staff working across Gatwick has been shortlisted for seven national awards. Based on the success of the Gatwick app 12 other airports across the world have adopted this smart phone based digital platform. Last year, we also launched augmented reality wayfinding, a world first for an airport. The system uses an indoor beacon based positioning system to enable passengers to find their way around the airport, as well as giving them personalised flight information and real-time queue updates. Gatwick also has the fastest 4G speeds of any UK airport.
