Joel: engineering apprentice

Meet Joel, one of our first-year Engineering Apprentices

Meet Joel, a first year engineering apprentice at GatwickAn apprenticeship at Gatwick Airport is incomparable to any other, as you will be taught a variety of skills at the highest level. As a first year apprentice I have already learnt a lot in this short space of time. An apprenticeship suits me as it gives me the fundamentals of working in a busy environment like Gatwick Airport, whilst also learning on the job.

In my first year, I attend college full time where I have gained knowledge I can relate back to real life work. I then use this knowledge when I work at the airport during school half terms.

Being at Gatwick has allowed me to work with highly skilled technicians who support me in my engineering journey, and I love every moment of it.

I am supported to ensure I understand each specific task and my mentors are patient and willing to teach me, this benefits me hugely as it encourages me to be the best engineer I can be.

Each engineering section allows me to learn a variety of new skills and systems and there is something new to obtain every time I go into the airport. This level of diversity encourages me to feel confident in my ability, relating back to why I believe this apprenticeship is the best!

Working at Gatwick I have also notice that my social and knowledge skills have improved, building confidence in myself and work. I regularly get to meet new people all with different backgrounds, allowing me to build my communication and networking skills which assist with both my personal and engineering development.
