Humans of Gatwick | Gatwick Airport

Elliot - Turnaround coordinator

I sometimes still have to pinch myself. I remember the excitement of flying out of Gatwick as a small child on holiday, but I never thought I would be part of the Gatwick family.

I’m Elliot, I am a turnaround coordinator - or TCO - here at Gatwick. My job is to oversee the safe and efficient turn around of an aircraft from landing to take-off.

This includes overseeing the disembarkation, fuelling, cleaning, catering and re-loading of the aircraft with bags and cargo, as well as overseeing the boarding process. I also need to make sure that the captain has the right information about the aircraft load, weather and flight plans. It can be stressful as some airlines do all this in only 25 minutes! But I love a challenge and I love my job. It never feels like work because I really enjoy what I do.

Before Gatwick, I worked at Southend Airport in passenger services and security. There wasn’t much more I could have done there, so I wanted to come to a bigger and more exciting airport to spread my wings.

I sometimes still have to pinch myself. I remember the excitement of flying out of Gatwick as a small child on holiday, but I never thought I would be part of the Gatwick family.

I work for Menzies Aviation on 32 different airlines - which is brilliant for me, because I’m a massive fan of plane spotting! So much so, that I have my own Instagram channel, @airside_elliot, where I post my aircraft photography. I love being able to share my passion for aviation - I get lots of people messaging me asking about careers at Gatwick or in aviation - it’s such a great reaction!

There are quite a few ‘influencers’ who work at Gatwick - we all know each other. We work in different roles across various airlines and companies. Every couple of years I try and do an ‘AV Geek’ trip to take new photos - one of my recent trips was to Canada, and that was great fun.”

Elliot’s favourite plane is the 757, so we’ll look out for your pictures when you’re working on the TUI planes! We love sharing your aviation photography, keep it coming!
