Sophie - construction projects
"My love of construction started when I was very young - my dad is a bricklayer by trade so I grew up with him building our house.
"My name is Sophie and I’m a construction project manager in the Low and Medium Complexity Programme team at Gatwick.
"I've worked in construction for 10 years and my role at Gatwick is so varied. It's not always easy when you're keeping a busy airport safe for passengers! My first job was to replace an area of damaged flooring and I've also helped re-brand the airport flight connection service.
It has become a passion of mine to represent women in construction, and to support young women who want to choose a STEM career.
"When I left university, it was during the credit crunch so there were no jobs. I offered my services to Transport For London for free to gain experience, and worked there for six months before I was offered a job.
"The biggest activity I'm involved with at the moment is refurbishing the airfield fire station. Each project is completely different, but they’re all equally as challenging.
"It has become a passion of mine to represent women in construction, and to support young women who want to choose a STEM career. My advice if you're considering a career in one of the STEM areas is to challenge yourself - you’re more capable than you realise."
