Our ambition is to compete to grow to become London’s airport of choice, and our aim is for the local economic region to enjoy the benefits of growth at Gatwick too.
Working with local business
As the single largest company in the region, Gatwick has a significant impact on the local economy not only through jobs created and direct spend with local businesses, but also through the companies which have chosen to base themselves in this region because of the airport.
In 2012 £81 million or 18% of our total spend, was direct with local companies. This spend was across 60 categories with £53m in goods and services and £28m in construction works. The airport employs 22,000 people and supports around 21,000 jobs across the region.
It is estimated that Gatwick Airport generates around £1.97 billion for London and the South East.
The Gatwick Diamond
The Gatwick Diamond has been identified as a vital economic region. We have excellent relationships with the Gatwick Diamond Initiative and Gatwick Diamond Business which ensures we continue to play an important part in attracting and retaining significant investment in the region and also supporting the businesses already based here.
We have been one of the proud sponsors of the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards for the last three years and this year are also supporting the Young Start Up Talent Award in the Gatwick Diamond, Brighton and Kent regions to encourage young people with an entrepreneurial flair.
Working with Gatwick
We work hard to encourage local companies to do business with us and ensure we have a positive impact on the region’s economy.
Gatwick Diamond Meet the Buyers
We are a key sponsor of the annual Gatwick Diamond Meet the Buyers event.
The event invites local business buyers to come along and meet with suitable suppliers in the area, giving smaller businesses a chance to compete and keeping local business alive.
In addition, we share details of our prime contractor list and have introduced the use of procurement cards to speed up payment.
This year we have signed the Crawley Developer and Partner Charter which is a commitment to use reasonable and best endeavours to do all we can to support local businesses. We moved from a national stationery supplier to a local Crawley Down based supplier and moved our security consumable spend from Tyne & Wear to Crawley. Also local supplier Gate Technologies is working with us to transform BA check-in.
Growing your business abroad - free seminar
A key value of the airport is the overseas connections local businesses can gain. To help local entrepreneurs and small businesses achieve this, Gatwick Airport has teamed up with the Government's Business is GREAT campaign and Barclays to put on a morning of inspiring speeches and panel discussions with special guests.
