Net zero direct emissions by 2040
Sustainable growth has been a key part of our transformation since 2009. It's our ambition to be the UK’s most sustainable airport. And we've pledged to reach Net Zero direct emissions before 2040.
Keeping the benefits of air travel whilst delivering clean growth is important to us. Our work with the industry and UK Government aims to reduce carbon emissions. That includes aircraft emissions.
Our Northern Runway plans are low impact. We will deliver the project in a sustainable way. This will help achieve the UK Government’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Our net zero transition forms part of our sustainability policy - our Decade of Change.
We're proud of our progress so far
Our Net Zero Transition
By 2019, we reduced our overall carbon emissions by 54% (vs. 1990). In 2017, airport operations were certified carbon neutral.
Our work to reduce noise
At our busiest in 2019, we were 48% quieter than in 1990. 62% of aircraft meet the highest international noise standards.
